Grab a coffee and settle in, because this quarter's Employee Spotlight is shining on someone who's been quietly keeping our Phoenix operations running like a well-oiled machine (literally) since 2019: Darren Holmes.
Before AER, Darren spent time working for the U.S. Postal Service, and before that, he built up years of experience repairing GM products for several other companies. So when Joe Bittick reached out to give him a heads-up about an opening at AER, it didn't take much convincing. Darren was ready to trade in the sun for something familiar — and the rest, as they say, is history.
Darren joined AER back in late 2019 as an Electronic Technician, and he's been a key part of our GM products repair team ever since.
Here's a fun bit of AER trivia: when Darren started, the entire Phoenix team was just three people — Joe, Joy, and Darren. Since they already knew each other, the office felt less like a new job and more like walking into a family reunion. That close-knit, everybody-knows-everybody spirit is something Darren says has stuck with AER ever since. Ask him how he'd describe the vibe here, and he'll tell you it's an open, supportive place where you can walk up to anyone, ask a question, and actually get the help you need.
If you've ever wondered who's turning the lights on before everyone else shows up — it's often Darren. A typical day starts early: opening the facility, powering up the equipment, and making sure everything's set for the day ahead. From there, he checks inventory, receives cores and GM instrument clusters, and gets to work repairing them. He also lends a hand unloading pallets when delivery trucks roll in. Steady, hands-on, and essential — that's Darren's day-to-day.
Outside of work, Darren is a member of the Hopi Tribe and grew up in Northern Arizona. He's an outdoors person through and through, with hiking near the top of his list of favorite ways to unwind. Lately, he and his brothers have taken on a meaningful project together: tending to some land as a family. It's clear that community and connection matter to Darren both at work and at home.
As for what excites Darren most about the future? Watching AER continue to grow. He's looking forward to helping the team expand while keeping the same focus on meeting customers' needs that's defined AER all along.
