Automakers have long toyed with the concept of autonomous technology, and Volkswagen is about to deliver. Earlier this year, The Volkswagen Group released their concept for the future development of an entirely autonomous vehicle, Sedric.
Unfortunately, the world will not see Sedric come alive until year 2025 when the program is scheduled to launch. While the project seems far off, VW’s & Kuka Robotics Corporation’s design concepts of robotic technology is already making headway towards autonomous vehicle development.
A Reuters article, “Volkswagen, Kuka Cooperate on Robots for Electric, Autonomous Cars,” announced Volkswagen’s partnership with Kuka to develop an automated charging system for electric cars. The new design entails a robot that would handle the process of connecting a charging cable at a charging station, eliminating the need for a driver to handle the connection and charging process. With this design, the driver would never have to leave the driver’s seat for a charge. The article claims that the automated charging project is just one concept the partnership plans to develop together.
